Huawei solar in the UK: SUN2000 inverters and LUNA2000 batteries

Huawei is worth comparing if you want the inverter, battery, backup and app from one maker, designed together from the start. Its SUN2000 inverters and LUNA2000 batteries share the FusionSolar app, and a matched system can be neat and well monitored. But the family name alone doesn't tell you much: an older L1 inverter, a three-phase MB0 and the two LUNA2000 battery generations differ in size, battery options and backup. And Huawei's published European warranty policy doesn't list the UK among its countries, so the warranty that applies to your system is something to get in writing before you sign.

Huawei's UK product-security statements, which by law cover connectable products sold in the UK, list its single-phase and three-phase home inverters, LUNA2000 batteries, optimisers and backup units, with security updates promised until 31 December 2029. UK wholesalers such as Segen list Huawei hybrid inverters, LUNA2000 battery modules and backup units.

Which SUN2000 inverter is on your quote?

An inverter turns the direct current (DC) from your panels into the alternating current (AC) your home and the grid use. Huawei's UK statements list these home inverter families:

The letters at the end matter. A quote that just says "Huawei 5 kW hybrid" doesn't tell you the generation, which batteries it takes or how backup is wired. Ask for the full model code and its datasheet.

The L1 has two MPPT inputs: each one finds the best operating point for its own group of panels, so an east-facing and a west-facing roof can be wired separately. That helps only if each string stays within the input's voltage and current limits, so ask for the string layout and a yearly output estimate for both roof faces.

G98. In Great Britain, up to 3.68 kW on a single-phase supply can be connected under G98: your installer fits the system and notifies the network operator within 28 days (30 days in Northern Ireland under G98/NI). The SUN2000-3.68KTL-L1 is rated at 3,680 W and 16 A, which fits that limit, and Huawei's L1 datasheet lists G98 and G99 among its grid standards. A 5 or 6 kW inverter, or adding a second inverter or an AC battery, needs a G99 application and the network operator's approval before connection.

Do you need Huawei optimisers?

An optimiser sits behind a panel and helps it work at its own best point, so one shaded panel drags the others down less. Huawei's UK list includes the SUN2000-450W-P2 and SUN2000-600W-P optimisers. They are optional: the inverter works without them, so each one on a quote should have a reason.

The number in the name is not a promise that it suits any panel. Ask for the electrical check with your exact panel, a plan showing which panels get optimisers, and two output estimates, with and without. Sizing a LUNA2000 battery

Huawei's UK statements list two LUNA2000 generations. The older S0 comes in 5, 10 and 15 kWh versions. The newer S1 uses 6.9 kWh modules: the 2024 datasheet we checked gives 6.9, 13.8 and 20.7 kWh usable with one, two or three modules, and charging and discharging power of 3.5, 7 and 10.5 kW. That datasheet lists L1, LC0, MAP0 and MB0 inverters among the compatible models, but a generation name on a quote is not proof that your inverter, firmware and battery work together, so ask for the compatibility check for your exact codes.

The kWh figure is how much energy the battery holds; the kW figure is how much power it can give at once. Start from what you use after the panels stop producing. Example (illustrative): a household using about 2,500 kWh a year might need 5 kWh in the evening. If the panels leave only 2 kWh spare on a grey day, a 13.8 kWh battery stores just those 2 kWh; a bigger battery can't make up the other 3. Homes with an electric car, a heat pump or a cheap overnight tariff can fill a larger battery from the grid at night, which is where extra capacity pays. If you already have a Huawei inverter, adding a LUNA2000 can be straightforward, but check the inverter's generation, the battery it accepts, the space, the meter and any updates needed. If your working inverter can't take the battery you want, compare replacing it with an AC-coupled battery that leaves it in place.

Backup needs its own box

In a power cut, an ordinary grid-connected system switches off, and a battery alone doesn't change that. Huawei's UK product list includes two kinds of backup unit: the older Backup Box (B0 single-phase, B1 three-phase) and SmartGuard (63A-S0 single-phase, 63A-T0 three-phase). Which one works depends on your inverter. For the L1 range, the datasheet names the Backup Box-B0, with backup output of up to 3,680 VA on the 3.68 kW model and 5,000 VA on the 5 and 6 kW models.

Ask the installer to write down whether backup is included, which circuits it covers, how much power is available, and what reserve stays in the battery. A fridge, lights and broadband are one thing; an electric shower or heat pump is another. Ask to see backup tested at handover.

Monitoring with FusionSolar

The FusionSolar app can show solar output, battery charge, what your home uses and what goes to the grid, but only if Huawei's own meter (the Smart Power Sensor) is fitted and set up correctly. A production graph alone can't tell you how much solar your home uses. At handover, ask for your own owner account, a check that import, export and battery flows all appear, and what happens to the account if you change installer. Warranty: get the UK terms in writing

Huawei publishes a Smart PV Warranty Policy for Europe (version 1.2, in force from 1 January 2026 to 31 December 2027) and a separate one for the rest of the world. The European policy lists the countries it applies to, and the UK is not among them. Huawei also says terms can vary by country and that the sales contract takes precedence.

What both policies say for home products:

• Inverters, optimisers and SmartGuard: 10 years.
• LUNA2000 batteries: 10 years, with years 6 to 10 only if the battery has been connected to Huawei's FusionSolar management system. Both policies give the S1 15 years in Europe, with years 6 to 15 on the same condition.
• Staying connected: if the battery isn't connected, or stays disconnected for more than six months, Huawei cancels the extra years that depend on the connection.
• Start date: for products sold through distributors, the warranty starts 180 days after Huawei ships the product, or earlier if you make a service request first, so the clock may start before your installation.

So for a UK home, expect 10 years on the inverter and at least 10 years on the battery if it stays online; whether an S1 gets 15 years is the point to confirm. Ask the installer or distributor for the warranty document that applies to your serial numbers in the UK, and whether Huawei's paid extension is available here (the European policy sets a maximum service duration of 20 years).

Checking a Huawei quote

Ask for a quote that names:

• the inverter's full model code and kW rating, and the string layout;
• any optimisers, with a plan of where they go;
• the LUNA2000 generation, number of modules and usable kWh;
• the power sensor, the dongle for the internet link, and the backup unit, or a statement that there is no backup;
• the G98 notification or G99 application, and the warranty document for each part.

VAT on a Huawei system is 0% until 31 March 2027 when the installer who sells it also fits it in your home; from 1 April 2027 it becomes 5% unless the government extends the relief. In Great Britain, exported power from a Huawei system is paid by an energy supplier through its own Smart Export Guarantee tariff, at that supplier's rates and conditions, and only if the installation is MCS-certified (or equivalently certified); there is no SEG in Northern Ireland. MCS's product directory covers panels, not inverters or batteries, so check the installer's MCS certificate.

Because the manufacturer's UK terms need confirming, the installer's own promises carry more weight here than usual. Under the Consumer Rights Act 2015, you can ask the business that sold and fitted the system to repair or replace faulty goods, whatever the manufacturer's warranty says. Before you pay a deposit, check whether the installer belongs to RECC or HIES, since MCS no longer requires it, and ask for their workmanship guarantee in writing. Our view: a Huawei system can be a tidy, well-monitored choice, especially if you want inverter, battery and backup designed together. Compare it with quotes of the same size and backup, and make the UK warranty wording part of the deal.

Huawei FAQs

Does every SUN2000 inverter take the same battery?

No. Check the inverter's full model code, the LUNA2000 generation, Huawei's compatibility information and any firmware updates. A shared family name doesn't prove your combination works.

Are Huawei optimisers compulsory?

No. They suit panels with shade or a different angle. Ask why each one is there and for an output estimate with and without them.

Will a LUNA2000 battery keep my power on in a power cut?

Only with a compatible backup unit (Backup Box or SmartGuard) installed and wired for the circuits you choose. Ask for those circuits in writing and a test at handover.

Does the battery warranty need an internet connection?

For the later years, yes. Huawei's policies make years 6 to 10 (or 6 to 15 for the S1 in Europe) depend on the battery being connected to FusionSolar, and cancel them after more than six months offline.
