SMA in the UK: Sunny Boy Smart Energy and Home Storage

SMA is worth comparing if your roof has several faces and you want a battery you can extend module by module. Its range covers different jobs: a Sunny Boy is solar-only, while a Sunny Boy Smart Energy is a single-phase hybrid that runs a battery. SMA's warranty gives the Smart Energy 5 years, or 10 if you register it within 12 months of commissioning. Before you sign, get written confirmation of the warranty for SMA's Home Storage battery in the UK, because the edition SMA publishes doesn't list the UK.

Sunny Boy or Sunny Boy Smart Energy?

A solar inverter converts power from the panels for your home and the grid. A hybrid also runs a compatible battery. SMA UK lists the Sunny Boy Smart Energy and SMA Home Storage for homes; solar-only Sunny Boy models (such as the SB3.0 to SB5.0-1AV-41) are also on the ENA register.

A quote that says only "SMA Sunny Boy" doesn't tell you whether it can run a Home Storage battery. Ask for the full code (for example SBSE5.0-50) and the datasheet.

All four sizes in this datasheet have three MPPTs and take lithium-ion batteries between 90 and 500 V from SMA's approved list.

For grid connection in Great Britain, what matters is total inverter current: 16 A per phase or less (3.68 kW single-phase) is a G98 install that the network operator is told about within 28 days, while anything bigger is a G99 application approved in advance. The ENA type-test register lists the SBSE3.6 under G98 and the 4.0, 5.0 and 6.0 under G99, all as compliant (published 8 July 2024). Northern Ireland uses G98/NI and G99/NI.

Three MPPTs, used well

A maximum power point tracker (MPPT) gets the best output from one group of panels. Three of them let the Smart Energy handle, say, east, south and west faces separately, as long as each string stays within the voltage limits. On one even roof face, three inputs add little.

SMA also builds ShadeFix into the inverter: software that SMA says optimises yield when strings are partly shaded. It doesn't remove the tree, and SMA gives no guaranteed gain for your roof. Compare layouts with and without the shaded area first, and ask for the installer's simulation. Optimisers fitted under panels are separate hardware with their own price and warranty. Home Storage: sized in modules

SMA Home Storage is a stack of 3.28 kWh battery modules; the Sunny Boy Smart Energy takes up to five, or 16.4 kWh, with firmware version 3.14 or later (four, 13.12 kWh, on earlier firmware). Capacity (kWh) sets how long it lasts; power (kW) sets how much it can run at once, and on the SBSE5.0 the battery can deliver up to 5,263 W. If your home uses 4 kWh between evening and morning and a dull day leaves 2 kWh of spare solar, a 10 kWh battery won't fill from the panels that day. Modules make it easy to start small, but ask how many your inverter allows, whether you can add them later and how much wall or floor space to leave.

Adding to an SMA system you already have

If you already have a Sunny Boy Smart Energy, check its firmware and the approved battery list before pricing Home Storage. If you have a solar-only Sunny Boy, there are two routes: keep it and add a battery with its own inverter (AC-coupled), or replace it with a hybrid. Backup: a socket or a system

The Smart Energy has a secure power supply output for selected loads: up to 3,680 W that you switch on manually in a power cut. Automatic battery backup for more of the house needs SMA's separate Backup unit (the datasheet gives 7,300 W), so ask whether it is offered for UK installs and priced in your quote. A battery alone doesn't keep the house running. The circuits to protect, the isolation equipment, start-up loads and a test at handover should all be in writing.

The SMA warranty in the UK

SMA's Limited Factory Warranty for home and business products (COM-RES-GB-en-88, for purchases from 20 May 2026) sets these terms:

• Length: 5 years for the Sunny Boy Smart Energy and Sunny Boy, extended automatically to 10 if you register the inverter on SMA's service site within 12 months of commissioning or of the first buyer's invoice. Some older SMA datasheets mention 30 days; the current terms say 12 months, but register early.
• Start date: without timely registration, the warranty runs from the day SMA delivered the inverter, not from commissioning.
• What SMA does in the UK: the UK is one of SMA's "Comfort" countries. Within the warranty period, SMA replaces a faulty unit on site or through a service partner, covering parts and labour if the inverter is at ground level or on a safely accessible flat roof. Travel, lifts and access to pitched roofs aren't covered. If your installer does the swap, SMA pays them a fixed service discount instead.
• Not covered: batteries not certified for SMA inverters, poor ventilation and incorrect installation.
• Later years: after registration, paid extended cover for years 11 to 20 can be bought.

The datasheet we checked lists SMA Smart Connected, which reports faults to your installer automatically, only for Belgium, Germany, Spain, Luxembourg, the Netherlands and Italy, so in the UK agree who watches Sunny Portal. Keep your owner login, the commissioning report and both registrations. If the inverter or battery turns out to be faulty (not of satisfactory quality, including how long it should reasonably last) or was badly fitted, the Consumer Rights Act 2015 gives you a claim against the business that sold you the system, whatever SMA's terms say, and an installer in RECC or HIES adds a route for disputes.

Comparing two SMA quotes

Compare the panel kWp that fits your roof, the predicted kWh, the warranties and the installed price, split into panels, inverter, battery, meter, backup equipment and labour; our guide to comparing solar quotes has a line-by-line list. Check each quote for:

1. the full inverter code (SB or SBSE), size and G98 or G99;
2. which roof face goes on each MPPT, and the shade simulation;
3. the number of Home Storage modules and the warranty document for the UK;
4. backup: the secure power socket only, or the Backup unit and which circuits;
5. who registers the inverter within 12 months, and who monitors it.

Buy the SBSE, Home Storage and panels as one installed job and VAT is 0% until 31 March 2027, rising to 5% from 1 April 2027 unless the relief is extended. Is a Sunny Boy the same as a Sunny Boy Smart Energy?

No. The Smart Energy is the hybrid that runs a battery. Check the full code before assuming an SMA inverter can take Home Storage.

Are three MPPTs worth it on one roof face?

They help when groups of panels face different ways or are shaded differently. On a single even roof face, they don't justify paying more on their own.

Can Home Storage work with any SMA inverter?

No. It needs a compatible SMA hybrid and the right firmware. An older solar-only Sunny Boy needs a separate battery inverter or a replacement hybrid.

How long is the SMA inverter warranty in the UK?
